The Faculty of Management Co-operative Education Program
The Interdisciplinary Co-operative Education (Co-op) program provides interested and qualified students in the B.Mgt. program with paid work opportunities that will help students excel academically and professionally, and prepare them for their future careers. The Co-op program is an optional, year-round program supplementary to academic programs in the Faculty. Three co-op work terms must be completed, including at least one in Term 1 or Term 2 of a Winter Session. Students normally end their degree on an academic term.
Students wishing to enrol in the Co-op program must apply in the Winter Session, Term 1 of their second or third year and are recommended to have completed MGMT_O 100 and MGMT_O 110 and have attained year three standing (i.e. completed at least 48 credits) prior to their first work term. Academic performance and suitability for the work environment (as assessed by the Co-op Program) will be the selection criteria used for program admission. Total enrolment into the Program is subject to the availability of appropriate work opportunities. Acceptance into the Program does not guarantee appropriate co-op work terms; students must apply and compete for positions, and employers decide whom to hire.
Students are enrolled in work term co-op courses that appear on students’ academic transcripts. In order to graduate with Co-operative Education Program designation on the transcript and parchment, a student must complete a minimum of three work terms (all co-op credits are additive to the normal 120 academic credits required by the Bachelor of Management program for graduation). Completion of the Interdisciplinary Co-operative Education Program typically requires an additional half-to-full-year to complete a bachelor's degree. Co-op and Career Coordinators engage students at their places of work to assess student learning, progress on co-op work term learning assignments (as outlined for each work term course), and liaise with co-op employers and supervisors.
Students transferring to UBC from accredited co-operative education programs at other institutions may request admission to the Interdisciplinary Co-operative Education Program and may receive credit for one previously completed work term.
